Literary Translations

I am always seeking unpublished Portuguese language fiction that is strange, playful, crass, disgusting, or otherwise pushes us to reconsider conventional wisdom. I also provide sample translations of books for publishers and agents, reader’s reports for publishers seeking more information on untranslated materials, manuscript editing, and general consultation.

Drop me a line at info@aamtranslations.com.

“Set during the difficult era of the Great War, The Devastation of Silence is the story of a captain in the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps who, with no documents showing his rank, finds himself in a German prison camp forced to share the circumstances of his poorer countrymen. He is hungry, constantly plagued by the sound of incessant detonations—and trying to finish his oral account of a strange story about a German scientist and voice recordings. In all this, he must seek meaning in his observations, his dreams, and, above all, silence.”

“In a long, delirious monologue driven by bile and cocaine, a prostitute named Anúncia recounts the story of her life, remembering and sometimes inhabiting the men and women who left the deepest scars on her psyche—her absent father, her mentally disturbed mother, the son she never wanted, the parade of lovers like the poet and the philosopher—all the while drawing grand conclusions about the nature of sex, life, and death from her own experiences. In a world ravaged by pollution and unceasing war, the narrator's acid tongue condemns anyone who believes that filth and depravity have more to do with copulation than the misery inflicted by exploitation and inequality.”

Incredibly humbled to have received a 2021 PEN/Heim Translation Grant for my translation of Brazilian author Márcia Barbieri’s novel, The Whore, described by the star-studded judges’ panel as, “a striking, genre-bending, surreal work that demands to be read again and again.”

Couldn’t be more thrilled to be part of Sublunary Editions’ inaugural issue of their new magazine of considered miscellany, Firmament, which features an especially dark short story by Brazilian author and multi-award winner Carol Rodrigues, in my translation.
